Julia Tom, cello Winner Khuner Young Artist Concerto Competition 1990-1991
Julia Tom (cello), won the second of our Young Artist Concerto Competitions, being selected winner in the 1990 auditions to perform with Prometheus in 1991. She has gone on to a stellar international music career.
While completing a Bachelor’s degree in English at Harvard, she studied cello with Joel Krosnick at the Julliard School. After making a mark in various international competitions and playing with a number of organizations (including a concerto with the San Francisco Symphony), she joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in January 2010. This Amsterdam based ensemble is known as one of the best symphony orchestras in the world. Previously, she was principal cellist of the Bremen Philharmonic, and toured regularly with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Julia is a member of the prize-winning Amsterdam Ensemble. She has studied under Yo-Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis and others luminary cellists, and has been a member of the Verano Quartet and Oberton Trio.
